Current Research Projects
The University of Washington MSRRTC conducts a comprehensive program of research on issues critical to individuals living with multiple sclerosis (MS). These include the following coordinated core areas of research designed to enhance function and employment in individuals with MS.
Research Project 1: Outcomes Measurement
The Outcomes Measurement core will study secondary conditions of MS, such as pain, fatigue, depression, and cognitive impairment. It will also examine outcomes including participation in life activities, and employment.
This project will evaluate measures of secondary conditions, and compare levels of pain, fatigue, and depression in people with MS to norms of the general population, and to other disability groups.
Research Project 2: Improved Rehabilitation Interventions
To develop improved medical or community rehabilitation interventions, we will conduct a trial of a self-management training that will be delivered by telephone. The study will examine whether the intervention effectively reduces secondary conditions such as fatigue and pain. In addition, the intervention's impact on participation, including employment will be evaluated.
Research Project 3: Improved Employment Outcomes
In order to improve employment outcomes for persons with MS, we will examine how effectively the national Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) 911 database identifies outcomes associated with successful vocational rehabilitation (VR).
The study will involve interviews with federal state VR counselors to understand their perspectives on VR services and MS. Follow-up surveys regarding the impact of accommodation services on employment will be conducted with recipients of services from MS Employment Assistance Service. At the conclusion of the study we will disseminate best practices and recommendations for improved employment services.
